Google researchers reported recently two major security flaws, Meltdown and Spectre, that could affect almost all computers, phones and servers and these vulnerabilities affect device’s microprocessors.
Meltdown and Spectre both allow low-privilege users to read sensitive information from memory on the same system via Speculative Execution.
The flaw theoretically allows any program to view the layout or contents of the device’s operating system, which often contains passwords, login keys, cached files, and other sensitive data.
Meltdown generally affects laptops, desktop computers and internet servers with Intel chips, whereas Spectre affects chips in smartphones, tablets, and computers powered by Intel, ARM, and AMD.
So along with the threats, the question is how do we protect our system?
The best way to protect our devices against any recent security flaw or vulnerability is to make our system up to date with security patches. The major operating systems have already started issuing patches that will secure the system against the Meltdown and Spectre attacks.
